#ThisorThatThursday Author Interview with Kerry Cox

I’d like to welcome author, Kerry Cox, to the blog for #ThisorThatThursday.

Favorite music or song: As a mediocre ex-drummer in what was a pretty good bar band, I like and appreciate an eclectic range of music, which is why you’ll find such varied artists as Tom Waits, BB King, Jimmy Buffet, Eminem, Caro Emerald, Leon Redbone, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Dean Martin, Luther Allison, Big Rude Jake, Eminem, James Taylor, and Gypsy Kings on my IPod.

Music that drives you crazy: I can’t handle the male vocalists today who whine their way through a tune. It’s not just the pitch, it’s the tonality. Makes me nuts.

Favorite beverage: Beer.
Something that gives you a sour face: When there’s no beer.

Favorite smell: Lavender. I plant it everywhere. Where I live, the fact that it’s drought tolerant and deer resistant is another great reason to plant it.

Something that makes you hold your nose: Litter boxes. And we have a number of them, because my wife has been active in feral cat/kitten rescue for decades. So, I built waterproof outdoor enclosures, accessible through cat doors from the house, for all the litter boxes.

Something you’re really good at: Swimming. I’ve been swimming since—well, home movies show my first lesson at 6 months old. I played water polo at Oregon State University, taught swimming and coached a youth swim team for years.

Something you’re really bad at: Modesty. Just kidding, I’m great at modesty.

Something you wish you could do: Play boogie-woogie piano.

Something you wish you’d never learned to do: Honestly, there isn’t a thing I regret learning. Life is about learning; when you stop learning, you’re either dead, or you might as well be.

Things to say to an author: “This is crisp, authentic dialogue that moves the story along nicely, well done!”

Things to say to an author if you want to be fictionally killed off in their next book: “You should write a story about the crazy people at my job.”

Favorite books (or genre): My favorite novel is A Confederacy of Dunces, by John Kennedy Toole. That said, my favorite genre remains the one I write in: crime fiction, from procedurals to thrillers.

Books you wouldn’t buy: Fantasy, Historical Romance, Slasher Horror, Cookbooks.

Favorite things to do: I love the outdoors and play a variety of sports, so whether I’m kayaking, playing pickleball, or landscaping my yard, I’m a happy guy. I love working with stone, growing my own vegetables, and the volunteer rescue work I do with Pacific Wildlife Care and The Marine Mammal Center here on the Central Coast.

Things you’d run through a fire or eat bugs to get out of doing: I hate cleaning the shower. I hate working high up on a ladder. I detest standing in long lines. No matter what, I will never go to Disneyland again.

 About Kerry:

When I was a kid, I didn’t want to be a policeman, or fireman, or astronaut, or major league third baseman. I wanted to be a forest ranger.

Okay, also a major league third baseman. Y’know, as a summer job.

But it turned out my inability to comprehend biochem made a career in wildlife management as realistic as my chances of starting for the Dodgers.

So, after four years at Oregon State University I declared myself graduated, and returned home to Southern California. There I taught swimming, karate, and pre-school while I sold articles to various magazines, wrote children’s shows for The Disney Channel, and eventually became a full-time writer.

And because one of my childhood dreams lives on, I now write novels focused on the dark underworld of wildlife trafficking, and work with various wildlife, marine mammal, and feral cat/kitten groups as a rescue volunteer along California’s Central Coast.

I’m still waiting on that call from the Dodgers.

I live by the ocean in Cambria, California with my wife and a clowder of cats.

A few of your favorite things: My three cats, the sun faces I collect and hang on an exterior wall, my long view of the Lowcountry marsh off my deck. Good red wine. Jazz. Oh, I guess I should add my husband.

Things you love about writing: I lose myself and time can pass very quickly. How a scene develops under my hands. Editing after the first draft is done, which is much like fine-tuning a piece of sculpture by scraping away the bits that don’t work and polishing the bits that do.

Hardest thing about being a writer: Promotion. Who has time to set this stuff up? But we have to.

Things you never want to run out of: Easy…coffee and wine.

Words that describe you: Optimistic. Stylish. Fun. Nurturing.

Words that describe you, but you wish they didn’t: Decisive. Blunt. Opinionated. (These traits do not work in my favor sometimes…)

Favorite foods: Filet, quiche, asparagus

Things that make you want to gag: Onions. Liver. FISH, and anything else that comes from a body of water. Yuck.

Something you’re really good at: Interior decorating. Loving my grandkids. Cardio & weight training. Makeup.

Things that make you want to run screaming from the room: Arrogant, condescending people.

Things you always put in your books: A pet. Dog or cat.

Things you never put in your books: Sex scene.

Things to say to an author: I could not put down your book!!

People you’d like to invite to dinner (living): Jeff Goldblum. Vincent D’Onofrio. Stephen Furtick. Angie Harmon, Louise Jensen. (This list changes often.)

Proudest moment: Those moments I see my grown kids fulfill their unique, wonderful purpose in life. For instance, one of my kids was destined to sing. When she steps onto a stage, I cry every time.

About Kerry:

Kerry’s publishing credits include a popular newspaper column, “The Lighter Side,” (2009—2011), and magazine articles in Local Life Magazine, The Bluffton Breeze, Lady Lowcountry, and Island Events Magazine. She is the author of two novels, The Hunting, women’s fiction, and The Deadening, psychological suspense. She spent twenty-five years in advertising as an account manager, creative director, and copywriter. The Deadening

#ThisorThatThursday Author Interview with C. L. Tolbert

I’d like to welcome author, C. L. Tolbert to the blog for #ThisorThatThursday.

A few of your favorite things:

My mother’s antique cloisonne apple. I store my rings in at night; family photos; my daughter’s ballet toe shoes; my son’s first poem; my wedding ring

Things you need for your writing sessions:

My computer, a desk, a chair, and relative silence

Things that hamper your writing:

Noise! I find certain noises distracting when I’m writing, especially people talking, or telephone calls. I also find loud music disturbing, so if I plan to write at a coffee shop, I visit on days when the barista in charge plays music more to my liking.

Things you love about writing:

I enjoy the process of writing. I love creating new characters and putting the old characters through the rigor of new circumstances. Plot development is always the first step, and scratches the same itch as completing a crossword or another sort of puzzle. Character development is next, then action. I write in stages and enjoy every one of them.

Hardest thing about being a writer:

The most difficult thing about being a writer is knowing when to stop editing. If it weren’t for deadlines, I’d edit forever.

Things you never want to run out of:

Books, pens, pencils, paper, watercolors

Favorite smell:

New babies, new puppies, springtime breezes

Something you wish you could do:

Snow ski

Something you like to do:

I like to write, and I enjoy reading. I also like playing tennis although I’m terrible at it. I enjoy walking when the weather is nice, and yoga, even on the worst of days.

Things you always put in your books:

Although my books are mysteries, each book has an issue of social justice at its center.

Favorite places you’ve been:

Florence, Venice, Paris, London, Istanbul, New York, Edinburgh, San Francisco, New Orleans, and Charleston

About C. L.:

In 2010, Cynthia Tolbert won the Georgia Bar Journal’s fiction contest for the short story version of OUT FROM SILENCE.  Cynthia developed that story into the first full-length novel of the Thornton Mystery Series, which was published by Level Best Books in December of 2019. Her second book in this same series, entitled THE REDEMPTION, which is set in New Orleans, will be released in February of 2021.  

Both books are legal procedurals, but they turn on complex characters, sympathetic suspects, and an attorney determined to find the truth. Adam, the protagonist in the first book, OUT FROM SILENCE, is deaf, and accused of killing his girlfriend. Louis, the protagonist in THE REDEMPTION, is only sixteen, and accused of killing two men. Their struggles to face their fear and to help their attorney prepare their defense is their greatest challenge.  

Cynthia has a Master’s in Special Education and taught children with learning disabilities before moving on to law school. She spent most of her legal career working as defense counsel to large corporations and traveled throughout the country as regional and national counsel. She also had the unique opportunity of teaching third-year law students in a clinical program at a law school in New Orleans where she ran the Homelessness Law Clinic and learned, first hand, about poverty in that city. The experiences and impressions she has collected from the past forty years contribute to the stories she writes today.

She has four children, and three grandchildren, and lives in Atlanta with her husband and schnauzer.

#ThisorThatThursday Author Interview with Tosca Lee

I’d like to welcome Tosca Lee back to the blog for #ThisorThatThursday.

Favorite thing to do when you have free time: Eat stuff like biscuits and gravy. Travel if I can, or watch TV and movies if I can’t. Wait… I feel like I should say “read a book.” But given a night at home, I’m eating buttered popcorn and watching Cobra Kai with my handsome hubby. :D

The thing you’ll always move to the bottom of your to do list: Taxes. Submitting health insurance receipts. Going to the dentist. Washing my hair. For real—people with long hair know washing, drying, and styling your hair is an hour of your life you’ll never get back.

Things you need when you’re in your writing cave: Snacks. Many, please. Mostly salty or buttery or greasy. Buttered popcorn will do. Fritos are great. Bacon is best. But bad for keyboards.

Things that distract you from writing: TV. My kids. My handsome hubby. My cuticles. Anything outside the window. Okay, anything.

Hardest thing about being a writer: Writing
Easiest thing about being a writer: Loving on my fans.

Something you’re really good at: Somehow along the way I became a decent cook of a few, select dishes.
Something you’re really bad at: Drawing. My fans sometimes ask me to draw pictures of specific things or people (Wonder Woman, my dogs…) when I sign books. They’re all stick figures. Everyone laughs.

Last best thing you ate: A double cheeseburger.

Last thing you regret eating: Haha, I regret nothing when it comes to eating.

Favorite things to do: Got to the movies. Wake up beside my husband. Hug my readers.
Things you’d run through a fire or eat bugs to get out of doing: Getting a tooth pulled. Eating bugs.

Best thing you’ve ever done: Marring my husband.
Biggest mistake: Dating anyone else.

Things you will run to the store for at midnight: Buttered popcorn (okay, the movie theater, not the store)

Things you never put on your shopping list: Quinoa.

Things that hamper your writing: Ideas, and being a “pantser.” I can’t plan what I write. I just have to wait for it to come to me.

Hardest thing about being a writer: Starting a new book -creating that first chapter.

Easiest thing about being a writer: Is there anything easy? LOL I can’t think of anything.

Words that describe you: Laid back, rolls with the punches, mom and wife, strong.

Words that describe you, but you wish they didn’t: Overwhelmed (sometimes), abuse survivor.

Favorite foods: Tacos, burgers and fries.

Things that make you want to gag: Brussel sprouts, rye bread, and licorice. YUK!

Favorite beverage: Dr Pepper and iced coffee

Something that gives you a sour face: black coffee and whiskey

Favorite smell: black cherry, cherry, and men’s cologne

Something that makes you hold your nose: maybe let’s not go there—LOL

Something you’re really good at: Writing and 911 dispatch

Something you’re really bad at: folding laundry (don’t look in my laundry room- ever. Ha!)

Things you never put in your books: flat and too perfect characters.

Favorite books (or genre): psychological thrillers, and anything by Daphne De Maurier

Books you wouldn’t buy: erotica, romance, sci fi.

Favorite things to do: Have a drink, play pool or darts with husband, dance with my daughter, sing karaoke (at home).

Things you’d run through a fire or eat bugs to get out of doing: If offered, going back to high school or being eighteen again. NO THANK YOU.

Things that make you happy: When a stranger contacts me to tell me they love my books, or glowing book reviews.

Things that drive you crazy: Jerky people.

Best thing you’ve ever done: Become a published author.

Biggest mistake: stopping for so many years (writing)

Most daring thing you’ve ever done: let someone read my books when I was so scared of what they thought.

Something you chickened out of doing: backing out of social functions because- people- Lol

The nicest thing a reader said to you: said something I wrote was brilliant, and that I should be famous.

The craziest thing a reader said to you: The lady that left a book review on Goodreads when she obviously didn’t even read or finish the book.

Things that make you happy: Jade: Finding a new author to read that has a series of books.

Things that drive you crazy: Jade: People who fold down edges of the pages to mark their spot in a book. That’s what bookmarks or scrap pieces of paper are made for.

Most embarrassing moment: Wilnona: Getting. My dress caught in a gas pump hose

The coolest person you’ve ever met: Jade: My dad and I am pretty fortunate because I met him a few seconds after my birth.

Wilnona: My mom when I was old enough understand how cool she really was.

The celebrity who didn’t look like he/she did in pictures/video: Wilnona: Myself People say it all the time “You don’t look the same in person”(I’m so not a celeb, but I couldn’t help myself.)

Hardest thing about being a writer: self-doubt, loneliness, unfair comparisons with other writers (that I do to myself)

Easiest thing about being a writer: Letting the characters be in control of the story and not me.

Words that describe you: pale, empathic, creative, loud, talented

Words that describe you, but you wish they didn’t: loud (hahaha), neurotic, anxious, short, bossy

Favorite foods: Indian food, grilled cheese, vegetarian chili, minestrone soup

Things that make you want to gag:  the texture of a raw tomato, all meat, poached pears, oysters

Favorite smell: rain
Something that makes you hold your nose: dead mice in a wall (I live in an old house.)

Something you’re really good at: Dancing
Something you’re really bad at: Math

Things you always put in your books: Beautifully damaged people
Things you never put in your books: Anything violent that has to do with eyeballs or teeth

Favorite places you’ve been: Venice, Italy

Favorite books (or genre): Horror!!! (specifically ghost stories and gothic fiction)
Books you wouldn’t buy: “Forbidden Romance” (the dark stuff like Daddy/Daughter and books about Abuse/Love….no thank you none of that is sexy nor is it love)

Favorite things to do: Travel!!
Things you’d run through a fire or eat bugs to get out of doing: anything with a spreadsheet!

 Most embarrassing moment: I was posing for an art class (nude) and I had held the pose for so long I did not realize that half my body had fallen asleep and had gone numb. I stood up on the break and reached for my robe and tried to step down off the podium, and I fell, completely naked and was all splayed out (very unattractive pose) and a student in the class, that I had a but of a crush on had to grab my robe and then toss it over my body…like I was on fire.

Proudest moment: leaving an abusive relationship

The nicest thing a reader said to you: “Your book spoke to my soul, I have never read a more perfect description of the human psyche unraveling”

Jennifer Anne Gordon is a gothic horror novelist. Her work includes Beautiful, Frightening and Silent (2020) which won the Kindle Award for Best Horror/Suspense for 2020,  and From Daylight to Madness (The Hotel book 1), and When the Sleeping Dead Still Talk (The Hotel book 2).

Jennifer is one of the hosts as well as the creator of Vox Vomitus, a video podcast on the Global Authors on the Air Network, as well as the Co-Host of the You Tube Channel “Talk Horror to Me”. She had been a contributor to Ladies of Horror Fiction, as well as Horror Tree.

Jennifer is a pale curly haired ginger, obsessed with horror, ghosts, abandoned buildings, and her dog "Lord Tubby.”

She graduated from the New Hampshire Institute of Art, where she studied Acting. She also studied at the University of New Hampshire with a concentration in Art History and English. 

She has made her living as an actress, a magician's assistant, a "gallerina,” a comic book dealer, a painter, and burlesque performer and for the past 10 years as an award-winning professional ballroom dancer, performer, instructor, and choreographer.

When not scribbling away (ok, typing frantically) she enjoys traveling with her husband and dance partner, teaching her dog ridiculous tricks (like 'give me a kiss' and 'what hand is the treat in?' ok these are not great tricks.) as well as taking photos of abandoned buildings and haunted locations.

She is a leo, so at the end of the day she just thinks about her hair.
